Sometimes a first time author will surprise you! Bridges did that for me! This book tells the story of the perpetrator and his associates and his victims of a Ponzi scheme. Short chapters written in the voice of several different characters keep the book moving at a good pace. Not to reveal too much, but there's a surprise ending that made me smile ! One never knows what to expect when reading the first book of a previously unpublished author. It is natural to pick it up reluctantly, almost as a last resort, afraid to start because you know you’ll likely reach that transition point where the enjoyment of starting a good book fades into the real work of finishing a mediocre one.
With “Of Whom I am Chief”, the reluctance to start was there, but to my surprise, the book started off good and got better; I failed to find that transition point. Jim Bridges helped me out by writing entirely in the first person, bringing the characters to life from their own thoughts then adding color later through impressions of others – very creative. Structurally, the large number of short chapters took a little getting used to but ultimately, it served my often-interrupted reading schedule well.
The storyline was good and proceeded at a nice pace although the shift to the final series of events felt a little abrupt. Mr. Bridges led me to several plausible directions going into the final chapters and brought the story to an interesting and entertaining end.
Well done Jim Bridges. Looking forward to the next one.

A spiral of wrong decisions to cover wrong decisions that moves quickly. Beautifully written, suspenseful and difficult to put down.
An intertaining, enlightening book with a perfect ending. I learned a great deal about Ponzi schemes and the stock market. Mr. Bridges has a delightful, wry sense of humor!!
The novel “Of Whom I am Chief” is a must read! I had a difficult time putting the book down. “Of Whom I am Chief” is a fictional story about a sharp guy who started his own investment company that started out like gang-busters, but eventually descended down the slippery slope of the Ponzi scheme. Like Tom Clancy, the author brings the story to life from the first person point of view of a host of different characters. Like John Grisham, the writer describes the surroundings where the story takes place in detail, from Houston, through College Station, to the Metroplex. Like Michael Lewis, Bridges does a great job explaining complex business world concepts to the everyday person. Best of all, there is a particular chapter toward the end about forgiveness and redemption which is especially moving. Do yourself a favor – read this book! You will be glad you did.
Jim Bridges really hit a home run on his first at bat effort into the world of fiction and the fans are going wild!! The novel is engaging, full of twists and makes you laugh out loud at times. The structure of short chapters told from each person's perspective keep you locked in and he does a great job of bringing the characters and the story to life. Like Grisham, Clancy and Big Dan Teague, Bridges is blessed with the gift of words and I can't wait to read the next one. PS my favorite character by far is the plastic surgeon.
